Some destinations leave you speechless with towering mountains or dramatic coastlines. Others captivate you with bustling cities and famous landmarks. Prince Edward Island was different. It didn’t ask me to hurry or fill every hour with activities. Instead, it invited me to slow down.

Between peaceful farmland, quiet ocean views, historic lighthouses, and beaches painted in shades of deep red, I found something I didn’t realize I needed—a few days of genuine rest.

Before that could happen, though, there was one small challenge standing between me and the island.

Things to Do in Prince Edward Island

Crossing the Confederation Bridge

One weird thing about me as I’ve gotten older—and I honestly have no idea why—is that driving across long bridges makes me incredibly anxious.

Prince Edward Island is connected to mainland New Brunswick by the Confederation Bridge, an engineering marvel stretching nearly eight miles (13 kilometers) across the Northumberland Strait. Standing about 197 feet above the water, it is the longest bridge in the world crossing ice-covered waters.

For most people, it’s simply the drive that marks the beginning of their island vacation. For me…it was an event.

I was probably driving around 30 miles per hour while everyone else politely passed me. By the time I reached the other side, I realized I had been gripping the steering wheel so tightly that my fingernails had left little marks in the palms of my hands.

Call me a dork if you want—but I was incredibly relieved when my tires finally touched Prince Edward Island.

That evening, I settled into my beachfront Airbnb in Borden-Carleton just in time to unpack and watch my first island sunset. As the sky slowly changed colors over the water, the anxiety of the bridge faded into the background, replaced by the peaceful rhythm of the ocean.

Visit Point Prim Lighthouse

A Lighthouse, Wind, and the Sound of the Atlantic

The next morning greeted me with exactly the kind of weather that encourages you to slow down—cold, windy, and rainy.

I decided to drive about an hour and a half to Point Prim Lighthouse, one of Prince Edward Island’s most recognizable landmarks. The drive itself became part of the experience as quiet country roads wound through farmland before opening to beautiful stretches of coastline.

Built in 1845, Point Prim Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse on Prince Edward Island and one of the few brick lighthouses in Canada. Visitors can climb to the top for panoramic views of the coastline, but I was still recovering from surgery and knew my body wasn’t quite ready for the climb. Sometimes wisdom means knowing when to admire something from the ground.

A wedding ceremony was taking place while I was there, so after spending some time enjoying the lighthouse, I quietly slipped away and returned to my Airbnb.

The rest of the afternoon couldn’t have been more relaxing. With the ocean just outside and cool autumn weather settling in, I spent the afternoon resting beside the fireplace before ending the day with another beautiful sunset over the water.

Sometimes, that’s enough.

Discovering Charlottetown

By the third morning, the weather had improved, making it the perfect day to explore Charlottetown.

Located about fifty minutes from where I was staying, the island’s capital is known as the Birthplace of Confederation because leaders from several British colonies gathered there in 1864, laying the foundation for the creation of Canada just three years later. Despite its historical significance, Charlottetown never felt overwhelming. Instead, it felt welcoming.

I wandered along the waterfront boardwalk, browsed a few local shops, explored the older streets, and enjoyed a leisurely lunch before continuing my drive across the island. It was exactly the kind of small coastal city I enjoy discovering—easy to explore, full of character, and wonderfully unhurried.

Walk the Red Sand Beaches at Argyle Shore Provincial Park

The Beauty of Prince Edward Island’s Red Shores

One place I especially enjoyed was Argyle Shore Provincial Park. The moment I stepped onto the beach, I immediately noticed something entirely new to me. The sand was red.

I had seen white sand beaches, dark volcanic beaches, and even pink sand before, but this was my first experience walking along Prince Edward Island’s famous red shoreline. Formed from iron-rich sandstone that has weathered over thousands of years, the coastline creates one of the island’s most recognizable landscapes.

I arrived during low tide, allowing me to walk farther along the beach while taking in the colorful cliffs and shoreline. There were only a couple of other visitors nearby, making it wonderfully peaceful. I found a picnic table overlooking the ocean and settled in with a cup of hot chocolate and a blueberry scone I had picked up earlier in Charlottetown.

As gentle waves rolled onto the shore and the late afternoon sunlight warmed the red sand, I found myself simply sitting still. No schedule. No rush. Just the quiet beauty of God’s creation.

Moments like these remind me that some of life’s greatest gifts aren’t found in extraordinary adventures, but in the simple privilege of slowing down long enough to notice what has been there all along.

Charlottetown is a convenient choice if you want to be closer to restaurants, shops, and attractions, while PEI’s smaller coastal communities are perfect for travelers looking for a quieter stay near the beach. For me, staying along the coast was part of what made the island feel so peaceful.

Is Prince Edward Island Worth Visiting?

If you’re looking for dramatic mountain scenery or a destination packed with nonstop attractions, Prince Edward Island may not be your first choice.

But if you’re longing for peaceful drives through rolling farmland, historic lighthouses, quiet beaches, colorful sunsets, and the opportunity to simply slow down, this little island offers something special.

Was it my favorite destination in Canada? Probably not. But not every journey has to become your favorite to leave a lasting impression.

Prince Edward Island gave me exactly what I needed at that season of life. It gave me rest. And sometimes, that is the greatest gift a destination can offer.

Final Thoughts

As I watched my final sunset sink behind the horizon, I couldn’t help but smile. Just a few days earlier, I had nervously crossed the Confederation Bridge with white knuckles and anxious thoughts. Now I was leaving with a quieter heart than when I had arrived.

Perhaps that’s the gift of Prince Edward Island. It doesn’t compete for your attention. It gently reminds you that there is beauty in slowing down, peace in quiet places, and joy in discovering that sometimes the destination isn’t meant to amaze you— it’s meant to restore you.
