A Journey to North America’s First Sunrise: Discovering Newfoundland

This Newfoundland, Canada travel guide shares my journey to Cape Spear, the easternmost point in North America, where I experienced the continent's first sunrise. Discover rugged coastlines, colorful fishing villages, dramatic Atlantic scenery, and why Newfoundland became one of the most meaningful and surprising destinations I've ever visited.

There are some destinations that instantly find their way onto your bucket list.  For me, Newfoundland wasn’t one of them.

In fact, if I’m being completely honest, it was one of the places I questioned the most. Unlike many of my road trips across the United States and Canada, reaching Newfoundland wasn’t as simple as getting behind the wheel. After exploring Prince Edward Island, I had to board a flight and continue farther north and farther east than I had ever traveled before.

Located on Canada's eastern coast, Newfoundland is known for dramatic Atlantic cliffs, colorful coastal communities, historic lighthouses, whale watching, iceberg season, and Cape Spear—the easternmost point in North America.

There was something intimidating about it.  It felt remote. Wild. Almost as if I were leaving the familiar behind and venturing into the unknown.

I found myself wondering if it would even be worth the journey.  Yet one thought kept calling me.

I couldn’t stop thinking about Cape Spear—the easternmost point in North America—where each morning the continent welcomes its very first sunrise.

How incredible would it be to stand there and watch a new day begin before anyone else on the continent?

That single thought became stronger than my uncertainty.  So I put my fears aside, boarded the plane, and trusted the journey.  Looking back, I am so thankful I did.

Why Visit Newfoundland, Canada?

Answering the Call to Go

The moment I arrived, every doubt began to disappear.  Newfoundland wasn’t just another destination.

It was towering sea cliffs carved by centuries of relentless Atlantic waves. It was colorful fishing villages filled with history and charm. It was rugged coastlines, historic lighthouses, dramatic skies, and landscapes so raw they felt almost untouched by time.

There was a quiet beauty here that photographs could never fully capture.  Every winding road seemed to reveal another breathtaking coastline, another hidden cove, another reminder that some of God’s greatest masterpieces are found far from the places we know best.

The farther I explored, the more I realized Newfoundland wasn’t simply a place to visit.  It was a place to experience.

Standing at the Edge of the Continent

Cape Spear: The Easternmost Point in North America

Nothing prepared me for that first morning at Cape Spear.  Long before sunrise, I bundled myself against the cold and made my way to the easternmost point of North America.

Standing there, I realized I wasn’t simply visiting another landmark.  I was standing at the very edge of a continent, waiting to witness the first sunrise in North America.

The air was bitterly cold.  The wind was relentless.  As I stood overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the gusts were so powerful they literally pushed my phone back against my face every time I tried to take a photograph. Holding it steady became part of the adventure.

Every few moments another wave exploded against the rocky shoreline, sending white spray high into the air.  The roar of the Atlantic echoed against the cliffs.  The wind howled without mercy.  The cold seemed to reach straight through every layer I was wearing.

It wasn’t simply something I saw.  It was something I felt.  Every crashing wave reminded me just how powerful this ocean truly is.

For a few moments, I stopped taking pictures.  I simply stood there.  Listening.  Watching.  Breathing in the salty air.  Feeling completely surrounded by God’s incredible creation.

Watching North America's First Sunrise

When God Met Me at Sunrise

The sky remained covered with thick clouds, and for a while I wondered if the sunrise would stay hidden.

Then, almost without warning, a small opening appeared along the horizon.  Golden rays quietly broke through the clouds, stretching across the Atlantic Ocean and announcing the beginning of a brand-new day.

It wasn’t the brilliant sunrise I had imagined.  It was something even more beautiful.  Standing there, surrounded by the fierce wind, the thunder of the waves, and the cool salt air, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace.

Not because everything around me had become calm.  The wind was still fierce.  The waves continued crashing against the rocks.  The clouds still filled the sky.  Yet in the middle of all that power, I felt the unmistakable peace and love of God.  It reminded me that His peace isn’t found in the absence of life’s storms.  His peace is found in His presence.

As those first rays of sunlight reached North America, I couldn’t help but marvel at His creation. The same God who spoke the oceans into existence, who painted the sky with light, and who set the sun in its place had allowed me to witness the beginning of a new day from the easternmost edge of the continent.

It became more than a sunrise.  It became worship.

Why Newfoundland is so Special

Looking back, I realized God had been teaching me something long before I ever boarded that flight.

The destination I questioned the most became the place that stirred my heart the deepest.

Sometimes He gently invites us to step beyond what feels comfortable.  To trust the journey.  To embrace the unknown.  Because on the other side of our uncertainty, He often has something far more beautiful waiting than we ever imagined.

Newfoundland became one of the greatest surprises of all my travels.  The place I was most hesitant to visit became one of the places I will treasure forever.
