My Nighttime Skincare Routine at 52: The Products I Actually Use

At 52, my nighttime skincare routine focuses on hydration, retinol, brightness, and gentle care for mature skin. I alternate between two simple routines rather than layering every active at once: a Retinol + Recovery night and a Brightening + Eye Treatment night, using products I personally love from Kerstin Florian and Natura Bissé. I’ve also included a simple three-product CeraVe routine for anyone looking for a more affordable approach.

Skincare has become one of those little rituals I appreciate more as I’ve gotten older.

At 52, I’ve noticed changes in my skin that simply weren’t there years ago. My skin needs more hydration, the area beneath my eyes has become more delicate, and fine lines have slowly begun making themselves known.

But I’m not interested in fighting every sign of aging.  I’m much more interested in caring for my skin well—keeping it hydrated, healthy-looking, radiant, and supported as it changes.

Over the years, and through more than a few spa discoveries during my travels, I’ve also found products that I genuinely love. Kerstin Florian makes up most of my skincare routine, while several Natura Bissé products have become favorites for my eye area.

For quite some time, though, I had something of a skincare problem: I owned several wonderful products without necessarily having a thoughtful system for using them.

More serum must be better, right?

Apparently, my bathroom counter and I had some simplifying to do.

Rather than layering every active product onto my skin every evening, I now alternate between two nighttime routines:

Night A: Retinol + Recovery
and
Night B: Brightening + Eye Treatment

Both routines include plenty of hydration, but each night has a different purpose.  And I love that.

It feels less like throwing products at my skin and much more like intentionally caring for it.

How I Prep Before Skincare

First Things First:  Makeup Nights

If I haven’t worn makeup that day, I simply begin with my regular cleanser.

But makeup nights require a little extra attention.  I start with Kerstin Florian Natural Rehydrating Makeup Remover & Cleanser to remove my face makeup before washing with my regular Kerstin Florian Rejuvenating Cleansing Gel.

After cleansing, I use an Andrea Eye Q’s Moisturizing Makeup Remover Pad around my eyes if there is any stubborn mascara remaining.

I have used these little pads for quite some time, and this is one of those inexpensive products I genuinely love. The moisturizing formula helps dissolve the remaining mascara without requiring me to repeatedly rub or tug at the delicate skin around my eyes.  I only use them when I’ve worn eye makeup.  On no-makeup nights, I skip them completely.

Once everything is clean, I move on to either Night A or Night B.

Night A: Cleanser → Retinol Serum → Hyaluronic Serum → Nourishing Eye Cream → Moisturizer
Night B: Cleanser → Brightening Serum → Hyaluronic Serum → Retinol Eye Treatment → Moisturizer

Retinol + Recovery: Night A

Night A is my facial-retinol night, so I keep the rest of my routine focused largely on hydration and nourishment.

Step 1: Kerstin Florian Rejuvenating Cleansing Gel

This is my regular nighttime cleanser.  I want my face to feel clean at the end of the day, but I don’t want that squeaky, tight feeling that makes me want to immediately reach for moisturizer.  The Rejuvenating Cleansing Gel leaves my skin feeling clean, soft, and refreshed, which makes it an easy first step for both of my nighttime routines.

Step 2: Kerstin Florian Correcting Retinol Serum

This is the treatment step on Night A.

I apply the Correcting Retinol Serum to my face while avoiding the delicate area immediately around my eyes.  At this stage of my life, fine lines, texture, and firmness are all things I’m paying more attention to, which is why retinol has earned a place in my routine.  But I’ve also learned that using a treatment doesn’t mean I need to layer five additional treatment products on top of it.

On Night A, I let the retinol have its moment.

Step 3: Kerstin Florian Correcting Hyaluronic Serum

Then comes hydration.

My Correcting Hyaluronic Serum is one of the few products that appears in both Night A and Night B because hydration is something my skin appreciates every single night.  I especially love the soft, plump feeling a hydrating serum gives my skin now that it isn’t quite as naturally hydrated as it once was.

Step 4: Natura Bissé Essential Shock Intense Eye & Lip Cream

Because Night A already includes retinol on my face, I prefer something nourishing and hydrating around my eyes.  I use Natura Bissé Essential Shock Intense Eye & Lip Cream around the delicate eye contour, applying a small amount without rubbing or pulling at the skin.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become much more conscious of how gently I treat this area.  And yes—the fact that this one doubles as a lip treatment is a lovely little bonus.

Step 5: Kerstin Florian Caviar Age-Defense Crème

My final step is Kerstin Florian Caviar Age-Defense Crème.

This is definitely one of the splurge products in my routine, but I love the rich, luxurious moisture it gives my skin at the end of the evening.  It is my final layer—the product that makes Night A feel finished.

Night A: Cleanse → Retinol → Hyaluronic Serum → Nourishing Eye Cream → Caviar Crème

Brightening + Eye Treatment: Night B

Night B gives my face a break from facial retinol and shifts the emphasis toward brightness, hydration, and more targeted care around my eyes.

Step 1: Kerstin Florian Rejuvenating Cleansing Gel

Same cleanser. Same simple beginning.  I’m finding that consistency is one of the nicest things about a skincare routine.  Not every night needs to be entirely different.

Step 2: Kerstin Florian Correcting Brightening Facial Serum

Instead of facial retinol, I use my Correcting Brightening Facial Serum.  This is the serum I reach for when my focus is maintaining a brighter, more even-looking complexion and addressing the dullness that can creep in over time.  Alternating this treatment with my facial retinol also means I’m no longer trying to use every active product I own in one evening.

My skin and my bathroom counter are both grateful.

Step 3: Kerstin Florian Correcting Hyaluronic Serum

Then comes my hyaluronic serum again.  Night A or Night B, this little bottle stays.

If there is one common thread running through my nighttime routine, it is hydration.

Step 4: Natura Bissé Inhibit Retinol Eye Lift

Night B is when the retinol treatment moves specifically to my eye area.

The skin beneath my eyes has become more delicate, and fine lines are something I’m increasingly aware of, so I wanted a product formulated specifically for the eye contour rather than simply bringing my facial retinol closer to my eyes.  I use Natura Bissé Inhibit Retinol Eye Lift as my more targeted nighttime eye treatment.  Because the eye area can be sensitive, this is also the kind of product I prefer to introduce gradually and use thoughtfully rather than assuming more is always better.

Step 5: Kerstin Florian Caviar Age-Defense Crème

And just like Night A, I finish everything with my Caviar Age-Defense Crème.

Night B: Cleanse → Brightening Serum → Hyaluronic Serum → Retinol Eye Treatment → Caviar Crème

Where Vitamin C Fits Into My Skincare Routine

You may notice one Kerstin Florian favorite missing from both routines: my Correcting Serum C+ Infusion.  I haven’t stopped using it.  I’ve simply moved it to my morning skincare routine, where it makes more sense with the products I use during the day.  And yes, the morning routine deserves a blog of its own.

A Budget-Friendly Nighttime Skincare Routine

Do you need to spend this much on skincare?

Absolutely not.

This is important to me because I never want someone reading my blog to look at my routine and think that healthy, thoughtful skincare requires a bathroom cabinet filled with $100 serums and $185 moisturizers.

These are the products I personally use and enjoy.  Some are splurges.  Some were discovered through spa experiences and travel.  Some I’ve continued purchasing simply because I love using them.  But expensive does not automatically mean necessary.

If I were building a much more budget-friendly nighttime routine, I would strip everything back to the three jobs I consider most important:

Cleanse → Treat → Moisturize

And I would start with these three.

Step 1: CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Instead of investing $50+ in a cleanser, CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a wonderful place to save.  A cleanser’s job is relatively straightforward: remove the day without leaving your skin feeling stripped.  You don’t necessarily need your most expensive skincare product washing down the drain after sixty seconds.

Step 2: CeraVe Skin Renewing Retinol Serum

If anti-aging is one of your goals, this is where I would put more emphasis.  CeraVe Skin Renewing Retinol Serum gives someone a much more approachable way to incorporate retinol into an evening routine without stepping immediately into luxury-skincare pricing.

And with a simplified routine, this can be your primary treatment step.  No brightening serum.  No separate hyaluronic serum.  No collection of five actives competing for space.  Just one thoughtful treatment.

Step 3: CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream

Finally, I would finish with CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream.  A good moisturizer can take care of a lot of what people sometimes try to accomplish with multiple separate products—particularly hydration and supporting that soft, comfortable feeling we want before going to bed.

So the entire budget routine becomes:

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser → CeraVe Skin Renewing Retinol Serum → CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream

That’s it.  Three products.  Simple, approachable, and far easier on the wallet.

And if you’re new to skincare, I actually think there is something very appealing about beginning there rather than immediately building a ten-step routine.  You can always add products later if your skin gives you a reason to.

Luxury vs. Affordable Skincare: Where I Choose to Splurge

Luxury Where You Love It, Simple Where You Don’t Need It

I think this is probably the philosophy that best describes my own approach to beauty.  I don’t mind splurging on something I genuinely love.  But I also don’t believe every product in a routine needs to be expensive simply because another one is.

My Andrea eye makeup pads are a perfect example.  They sit beside some very luxurious Natura Bissé and Kerstin Florian products, yet they’re inexpensive, simple, and I continue using them because they work for me.

That’s the combination I’m interested in.  Not prestige for the sake of prestige.  Not bargain hunting simply for the sake of spending less.  Just finding products I enjoy, paying attention to how my skin responds, and deciding where a splurge actually feels worthwhile.

My Approach to Skincare at 52

A Routine That Feels Like Me

One thing I don’t want skincare to become is another complicated checklist.  There will always be another serum.  Another cream.  Another ingredient.  Another product promising that we absolutely cannot live without it.

I’m much more interested in slowing things down and learning what works for my skin.

Night A gives me renewal and recovery.

Night B gives me brightness and targeted eye care.

Both give me hydration.  And neither requires me to use every bottle I own every single night.

At 52, I’m not trying to make my skin look 25.  I simply want to care for the skin I have now—to help it look healthy, hydrated, radiant, and beautifully cared for as I continue getting older.  And that feels like a much better goal.

Shop My Nighttime Skincare Routine

I’ve gathered the products from both my Night A + Night B routines, along with my makeup-removal favorites, in one place on my Amazon storefront.

For anyone looking for a simpler or more budget-conscious option, I’ve also shared the three essentials I would prioritize: a gentle cleanser, a retinol treatment, and a good moisturizer.

Because beautiful skincare doesn’t have to mean complicated skincare.  And it certainly doesn’t have to mean expensive skincare.

Skincare is personal. Introduce active ingredients such as retinol gradually, follow individual product directions, and consult a dermatologist if you have persistent irritation or specific skin concerns. Drinking water is also a must for me. I’ve found that staying hydrated is not only an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but it also makes a noticeable difference in how my skin looks and feels. For me, good skincare starts with what I put into my body just as much as what I put on my skin.

XOXO, Karen.
