It's the Switzerland you picture in your mind: the classic postcard, those breathtaking screensavers that make you wonder if a place like that could actually exist. Standing in the valley, surrounded by rolling green hills and dramatic mountain peaks, I couldn't help but think of the Shire from The Lord of the Rings, a peaceful little world blissfully removed from everything else.

The name Grindelwald comes from two Old High German roots: Grindel, meaning "ridge," and Wald, meaning "forest", together translating to "forest by the mountain ridge." It's a fitting description for a village tucked beneath the legendary Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks, surrounded by steep alpine ridges and dense forest.
Grindelwald's history stretches back to the 12th century, when early alpine communities began settling the valley for farming and grazing. Over the centuries, it became renowned for its glaciers, and today it draws visitors from around the world for its incredible scenery and world-famous access to Jungfraujoch: the "Top of Europe."

The journey to Grindelwald is just as rewarding as the destination itself. Traveling by private transfer from Luzern, I wound through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Switzerland and made several unforgettable stops along the way.

Powerful cascades tumble dramatically down the mountainside into the turquoise waters of Lake Brienz. The roar of the water and the surrounding alpine forest made it feel like a hidden corner of untouched nature.

Perfectly positioned between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, this picturesque Swiss town is a must-stop. I indulged in a velvety cup of Swiss hot chocolate from a local chocolatier, an essential treat in the heart of Switzerland.

Sheer cliffs rise on either side as waterfalls pour down from above. It is, without a doubt, one of the most magical landscapes in Europe.

Arriving in Grindelwald: A Storybook Alpine Village
After a full day of alpine exploration, I arrived in the storybook village of Grindelwald and checked into the Belvedere Swiss Quality Hotel, a beautiful property with sweeping views of the surrounding Bernese Alps. Though rain fell softly for all three days of my stay, Grindelwald's fairytale charm was completely untouched by the grey skies.
Between misty morning walks through the village, memorable meals at Restaurant Kreuz & Post, where the food was some of the most delicious I had during my entire Switzerland trip and a deeply relaxing spa day back at the hotel, every moment felt dreamlike. Grindelwald rewards slow travel. There's no need to rush.
Seeing Glaciers for the First Time in Grindelwald
Coming from the United States, I had never seen a glacier before. In Switzerland, they seem to be everywhere and in Grindelwald, I saw my first ones, resting atop the mountains that cradle the valley. It was surreal and quietly humbling. In that moment, looking up at the snow and ice clinging to the peaks above the village, Grindelwald somehow became even more magical than I had imagined it would be.
