Banff, Canada: A Journey Beneath His Majesty

Some places impress us with their beauty. Others leave us humbled by their grandeur.

Banff did something more. It reminded me just how small I am—and how great God is.

There are beautiful places in this world, and then there are places that leave a mark on your soul. For me, Banff National Park in Alberta is one of those places.

Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Banff is home to towering mountain peaks, turquoise lakes, rushing rivers, and landscapes so breathtaking they almost seem unreal. It is the kind of place that causes you to stop, stare, and wonder if what you’re seeing could possibly be real.

I have visited Banff three different times, as a solo female traveler, and each journey has been unforgettable. Yet it was during my most recent visit in 2024 that I experienced something I will never forget.

Moraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks

Beneath the Mountains

It happened at Moraine Lake. As I stood atop the Rockpile overlooking the famous turquoise waters, surrounded by the towering peaks of the Valley of the Ten Peaks, I was overcome by a feeling I had never experienced anywhere else in my travels.

It wasn’t excitement. It wasn’t happiness. It wasn’t even amazement. It was awe.

The kind of awe that quiets your soul. The kind that leaves you speechless. The kind that reminds you that you are standing in the presence of something far greater than yourself.

As I looked up at those massive mountains stretching toward the heavens, I felt incredibly small. Not insignificant. Just small. Like an ant standing at the feet of God, looking upward.

For a brief moment, all the distractions, worries, responsibilities, and questions that normally occupy my mind seemed to fade away. Standing there, surrounded by the majesty of creation, I became deeply aware of the One who created it all.

I have visited many beautiful places throughout my life, but nowhere else has creation so clearly reminded me of the majesty of God as it did that morning at Moraine Lake.

It wasn’t an audible voice. It wasn’t an emotional experience. It was something quieter.

A profound awareness of His greatness.

Standing beneath those towering peaks, I was reminded that the God who carved these valleys, raised these mountains, and painted these lakes with impossible shades of blue is far greater than I can comprehend—and yet He still knows me by name.

In that moment, I felt both humbled by His majesty and comforted by His presence.

Psalm 8: A Reminder of His Greatness

Later, as I reflected on that experience, I found myself thinking about Psalm 8:

“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him?”

For the first time, I felt like I truly understood those words. Standing beneath those mountains, I felt incredibly small. Yet at the same time, I felt deeply known. Deeply loved. Deeply seen.

That is the paradox of God’s majesty. The greater He appears, the more humbled we become.

Yet somehow, His greatness does not make us feel forgotten. It reminds us that we belong to Him.

Banff: Beyond the Beauty

Banff is filled with unforgettable sights. The turquoise waters of Moraine Lake. The iconic beauty of Lake Louise. The rushing waters of the Bow River. The reflection of Mount Rundle across Vermilion Lakes. The endless forests stretching beneath snow-covered peaks.

But long after the photographs fade and the memories soften, what remains with me is not the scenery. It is the reminder.

The reminder that creation is at its best when it points us beyond itself. Beyond the mountains. Beyond the lakes. Beyond the beauty. To the Creator.

Of all the places I have traveled, Banff remains one of the few places where I felt as though I was standing beneath His majesty.

And for that reason, it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Until our next journey,

Elohim Li,

xoxo Karen 🤍
